Is the pet cologne safe for dogs and cats?

Eau is French for water. Our Eau de Pawlogne uses distilled water as a carrier/solvent for our natural fragrance oils. And it is this very same carrier/solvent that makes our FDA-approved pet cologne safer, healthier, and more effective for your dogs and cats. Aside from that, we only use natural essential oils for our active ingredients.

Safety for Cats

There are debates on the safety of certain essential oils^[1] for cats. The reason that cats require a little more care in terms of the essential oils used on them or around them is due in large part to their size, but mainly because cats lack the major phenol UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) enzymes. In simpler terms, cats can't biologically process certain essential oils when ingested or inhaled in unmoderated quantities.

A single mist spray of an Eau de Pawlogne is only 0.6 mL. With a 5% concentration of an active ingredient, a cat is only exposed to 0.03 mL of an active ingredient of an essential oil-based pet cologne. The key here is to use Eau de Pawlogne, as is with any other consumables, in moderate and reasonable quantity. A couple of mist sprays of Eau de Pawlogne are undoubtedly in moderate and reasonable quantity — a quantity that is far less below the toxicity level known to cats. We also made precautionary efforts in avoiding certain essential oils^[1] known to be hazardous to cats in formulating our active ingredients.

Safety for Dogs

We can't use alcohol-based pet colognes because cosmetic-grade alcohol dehydrates our pet's skin and fur.  Sadly, this is a common mistake in human-grade formulations that are repurposed as pet colognes in the market today.

It is indeed cost-efficient to simply change the label "for pets." It also helps that alcohol-based formulations are a lot easier to stabilize (prolonging the life of a formulation and longevity of a scent than water-based formulations).

Water-based perfumes are inherently difficult to formulate as water and oil do not mix. Since an emulsifier is needed for this type of formulation, it generally means water-based perfumes could be very expensive to formulate. Increasing the chance of success when creating a water-based fragrance involves skillful perfumery and meticulous compounding of different fragrant essential oils of 5% concentration.

This higher concentration means more skillful perfumery to keep it soluble with water.

That is why water-based perfumes are generally regarded as weak. It's easier to dissolve smaller concentrations of fragrance oils in water. Difficult does not mean impossible.
